This was done primarily to discourage further development and interest in the Apple II line, and to push the Apple III as its successor. Specialised circuity blocked access to Apple III features when running in Apple II emulation. The paddle and serial ports can also function in Apple II mode. The keyboard, internal floppy drive (and one external Disk III), display and speaker all act as Apple II peripherals. This emulation boot disk is required to turn the Apple III into a standard 48 Kb Apple II Plus. The Apple III (Apple ///) has the capability to run Apple II software.
